Messages are always welcome at the address above but it's a good idea to include the current date in your subject line, otherwise your mail may be filtered as spam. Now and in the recent past (2008): I spent autumn and winter of 2007 in southern China as one of the first four foreign artists in residence at He Xiangning Art Museum's Contemporary Art Terminal in Shenzhen; while there I made Video With National Characteristics. A book about the English Heritage Artist Fellowships has been published by Art Editions North; there's an interview with me, critical text about my work and images from my Phantom Power films. Uncanny Valley: Collected Short Fiction is now available as a print-on-demand title, as a download, at online sellers and real world book shops: you can buy it here now. This summer I was one of the artists in residence at the new Contemporary Art Gallery in Bedford, working on some ideas for animations and films. In September I participated in the Dislocate 08 symposium in Yokohama, Japan (hence the manga style self-portrait this month...) I presented a project called Kitsune San [Fox Night], which will have a new page on the site soon. The future (2008-2009): I've started working on a new novel, which will (probably) feature Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig II of Bavaria, Superman, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Richard Wagner and Nazis. I'm also working on several new animations exploring some ideas related to ethnic self-images and skin colour, and on a number of projects based on material collected in Japan. Press and media coverage of me and my work: a-n, Art Monthly, The Art Newspaper, BBC local radio, The Big Issue, Cabinet, Channel 4 Television (UK), China Daily, Dazed & Confused, The Evening Standard (London), The Face, Flux, Frieze, i-d (UK), IDN (Japan), The Guardian, The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, LBC, Mac Format, MAP, Metro, QTV (China), Realtime (Australia), Resonance FM, The Sci-Fi Channel (UK), Scotland on Sunday, SFX, The Times (UK), Wired.
I'm a free range writer and artist from the UK. My work is diverse and has been seen and heard in digital media, on radio, television and the stage, in art galleries, at film festivals, in print and on the net. I make and show work across Britain and internationally. Group exhibitions include 'New Forest Pavilion' at the Venice Art Biennale 2005, 'Blink' at Gasworks Gallery, London in 2006, 'Broadcast Yourself' at Hatton Gallery, Newcastle and Cornerhouse, Manchester 2008, plus other shows and festivals in the UK, Hong Kong, China, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Germany, Norway, Canada, the United States and Japan.
I've been artist in residence for New Media Scotland and the ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum at the University of Edinburgh (2006-2007), among others. In 2004 I was awarded an Arts Council England/English Heritage Artist's Fellowship. In 2006 I was commissioned to make the film Qingdao 58 Middle in China. I'm the author of two published novels (Their Heads Are Anonymous and Monkey Boys.) I've been involved with the new fiction site Pulp.Net since it started five years ago, publically as an editor and behind the scenes. With Joe Magee I made the frequently (and globally) shown digital animation Hypnomart for Channel 4 Television's 'Animate!'. I also regularly take part in readings, talks, lectures and participatory arts work with people from school age upwards. I'm a member of New Work Network, the Scottish Artists' Union and the Tufty Club (lapsed). My agency for novels and other writing is Sheil Land Associates, London. |
